From the land of Imagine-RE.com comes a pop culture program designed to engage kids of ages and up in Social Action and Justice awareness. “Harry and UU” puts children on quests to achieve justice in a world riddled with injustices, exploring stories and themes from the Harry Potter book series. While engaging in activity-based classes, students will explore how story informs our values and beliefs, and inspires our caring for others. At First Parish, this journey was begun after we turned the calendar to 2017.
Magical lessons (including potions, charms, divination, and herbology) are offered in the Hugwurtz classroom of Parish Hall basement. Over successive classes, students will create, read and discuss, play games (Quiddich, anyone?), and choose projects to work on together that benefit the larger community. In February, for instance, children obtained Fair Trade chocolate, will share it at a special Tea-centered Coffee Hour to raise awareness and educate themselves on the importance of supporting humane working conditions all over the world.
No prior knowledge of magic or of Harry Potter is required to join the class. All new students, professors, and prefects will be matched with wands in order to initiate themselves into this world of magic and ministry.
