On May 14, 2008, First Parish Church, UU, Northboro, became an official Green Sanctuary! Green Sanctuary is the name of a formalized process developed by the organization, UU Ministry for the Earth (UUMFE formerly Seventh Principle Project), to assist UU congregations in living in greater harmony with our planetary home while also helping solve the numerous environmental crises that threaten our quality of life and the lives of future generations. From July 2005 through December 2007, the congregation actively engaged in carrying out our Action Plan developed after two community forums dedicated to hearing First Parish members’ recommendations for actions to green our faith community. In February 2008, we completed the last step of the multi-year process by submitting our application for accreditation to the UUMFE. On May 20 we received a letter from UUMFE Director, Katherine Jesch, congratulating us on achieving our Green Sanctuary accreditation. At GA 2008, we were formally recognized in the UUMFE annual award ceremony to celebrate the year’s accredited congregations. Also of note: as part of our Green Sanctuary process, the Standing Committee approved a set of Green Policy Guidelines on November 28, 2007. We are proud of our achievement. We also know it is only the beginning of each member’s and our collective journey toward responding to the environmental challenges of our times and to live in greater accordance with the UU Seventh Principle, “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are part.” |
